About Ernesto Ruiz
My interest in photography started when I was in undergraduate architecture school, in the early 1990s in Puerto Rico. I bought a 35mm SLR for a student trip to Europe and was hooked. I attended graduate architecture school at the University of Minnesota and have practiced in the Twin Cities since 1996. Photography had to take a backseat for many years. In the Fall of 2013 I bought my first DSLR, and since early 2015 my time commitment and investment in photography have quickly escalated.
I have been focusing on landscape, cityscape and portrait photography. I love that photography gets me out experiencing the world even in challenging conditions. My focus is on quality and not volume, and I consider myself lucky if I bring back one good image from an outing. Many times after I compose a shot, I leave the camera in place for an hour or two as I wait to capture the "right" light. I have a love/hate relationship with the seemingly unlimited editing freedom that modern software allows. I do not enjoy using most "quick solution" software editing packages, especially "HDR" software, as I often consider the results heavy handed and unnatural. That said, I do sometimes combine exposures by hand blending, using a tablet to manually paint in parts of different images. This means that I may spend a few hours fine-tuning an image, mostly by trial and error, until I get the results I want.
